Use of floating bead filters to recondition recirculating waters in warmwater aquaculture production systems

چکیده
Floating bead filters (FBFs) are expandable granular filters that display a bioclarification behavior similar to sand filters. They function as a physical filtration device (or clarifier) by removing solids, while simultaneously encouraging the growth of bacteria that remove dissolved wastes from the water through biofiltration processes. Presently, there are two classes of FBFs that exist. Hydraulic and air washed units fall into the ‘gently washed’ category, which display reduced biofilm abrasion during backwashing and must be washed at a high frequency. Conversely, propeller-washed and paddle-washed filters inflict damage to a relatively heavy biofilm during backwashing, and are considered ‘aggressively washed’. FBFs capture solids through four identifiable mechanisms: straining, settling, interception, and adsorption. In the biofiltration mode, bead filters are classified as fixed film reactors, where each bead becomes coated with a thin film of bacteria that extracts nutrients from the recirculating water as it passes through the bed. In this paper the authors first establish application categories and parameters for recirculating system use, then give criterion for the sizing of recirculating system components in tabular form. Sizing variables for FBFs are normalized to the feed application rates, and the primary method for the sizing is based on a volumetric organic loading rate. Evaluation parameter equations are also given for comparison of bioclarifier performance. These equations include volumetric TAN conversion rate (VTR), the volumetric nitrite conversion rate (VNR), and the volumetric oxygen consumption rate of the bioclarifier (OCF). © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. متن کاملDeveloping Backwash Protocols for Floating-Bead Filters: A Model of Solids-Loading and Biofilm-Retention Effects on Nitrification
Maintaining effective solids capture and nitrification can determine the success or failure of a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Although solids capture and nitrification are often performed sequentially, they are united in floating-bead filters. The use of bead filters in a RAS began at the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery (Cooley 1979). More recently, a bead filter was developed and te...
متن کاملNitrification performance of a propeller-washed bead clarifier supporting a fluidized sand biofilter in a recirculating warmwater fish system
A propeller-wash bead filter (PWBF) and a fluidized sand filter (FSF) on a 28 m recirculating system stocked with tilapia maintained favorablewater quality at five different feed rates, ranging from 0.9 to 4.5 kg feed per day. TAN removal rates ranged up to about 200 g TAN/m of media per day for each of the units. Peak rates of 244 g TAN/m of media per day were observed when the recirculating f...

Over the past decade, the environmental impact of wastes discharged from high-density flow-through fish-production systems has been viewed with increasing concern. Recirculating aquaculture systems are gaining wider acceptance because of their ability to reduce waste discharges, improve quality control, and reduce costs. The crucial processes that must be addressed in treating recirculating wat...
